Light Fit-out Al-Balad | Beit Al-Wassieya

We worked on a light fit-out project in the historic district of Al Balad, Jeddah, where eight heritage houses were transformed into diverse facilities including residential, commercial, hospitality, and cultural spaces. The design focused on blending modern lighting techniques with the charm of traditional Hijazi architecture, using warm and intimate solutions for homes, flexible systems for commercial areas, and atmospheric designs for boutique hospitality and dining. According to residents interviewed during the site visit, Al-Wasseiya House is approximately 100 years old. The last known resident was Ali Massajji, who served as the Imam of Abu Anbah Mosque and later at the Al-Jilani Mosque and zawiyah. The ground floor of the house was designated for commercial use, featuring several shops .This reflects a common architectural pattern in historic Jeddah, where buildings located on main streets or alleys often incorporate commercial functions on the ground level. These spaces open directly onto the street, influencing the design of façades and the placement and number of entrances. In Al-Wasseiya House, the shops were opened along the main façade facing the street, leading the architect to provide a single main entrance to serve all residents. The house features two street-facing façades: a primary and a secondary one, emphasizing its commercial character. The architectural layout suggests that the house was designed to function as a guesthouse, accommodating travelers and merchants. Its internal arrangement resembles that of roadside inns or rest stops, supporting both hospitality and transient use.
